Part 3: Advanced Maintenance

The TPMS Trap & The Future of Maintenance

Modern cars are equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS). This technology has made drivers lazy. In this final part of our tire guide, we explain why relying on that little dashboard light is a mistake.

Why Your TPMS Light is Too Late

By law, the TPMS light is only required to illuminate when a tire is 25% under-inflated. Let's do the math:

If you are driving at 27 PSI, you are dangerously low, burning extra fuel, and wearing out your tires—but the light is OFF. The TPMS is a "catastrophe warning," not a maintenance tool. You must manually check pressures once a month.

Nitrogen vs. Air: Is it Worth the Hype?

You’ve likely seen the green valve caps at Costco or dealerships offering Nitrogen inflation. Is it a scam?

The Reality: Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so they leak through the rubber slightly slower. However, regular air is already 78% nitrogen. For the average commuter, paying $50 for nitrogen is not necessary. It is better to check your pressure regularly with standard air than to neglect "special" nitrogen tires.

💡 Buying Tires Online?

When you purchase a tire online and have it shipped to an installer, do not assume they set the pressure correctly. Installers often over-inflate to "seat the bead" and forget to lower it. Always check the pressure yourself before leaving the shop.

The Monthly 5-Minute Routine

To maximize the life of your investment, follow this simple routine:

  1. First of the Month: Check all 4 tires + the spare (if you have one).
  2. Visual Inspection: Look for nails, bulges, or cracks in the sidewall.
  3. Cap Check: Ensure all valve stem caps are present. They keep moisture and dirt out of the valve core.

If your tires are constantly losing air (more than 1 PSI per month), you likely have a slow leak, a corroded rim, or a bad valve stem. Don't just keep pumping it up; get it fixed. A slow leak is a blowout waiting to happen.

Finally, if your tires are already damaged from neglect, don't risk it. The online market offers incredible convenience for replacements.
