The Ferrari Luce, the first-ever series-production electric vehicle from Ferrari, has been sold at an auction for a staggering $40 million. This sale has set multiple records, including the most expensive electric car and the most expensive charity car ever sold at auction.

The Luce "Chassis 0" was auctioned off by RM Sotheby's at the Monterey sale, with the bidding war reaching an astonishing $40 million. This price is significantly higher than the initial estimate of around $1.1 million. The car that was sold is a fully configured five-seat electric vehicle with a Madreperla Semi-Gloss exterior and a bespoke cabin trimmed in Le Mans metallic leather.

Under the hood, the Luce packs four electric motors, one at each axle, with the front pair delivering 141 horsepower each and the rears 476 horsepower apiece, for a combined 1,050 horsepower. Ferrari claims a 0-60 miles per hour time of just 2.5 seconds, putting the performance deep into modern supercar territory.

The charity angle of this sale turned the technical showcase into something else entirely. The sale of the Luce "Tailor Made" charity lot has topped the previous McLaren F1 GTR auction result by $5.4 million. Every dollar from this sale will go through The Ferrari Foundation to fund future educational initiatives.

It's worth noting that this sale does not set a new normal for the price of the Luce. Instead, it's a one-off charity spectacle that showcases the exclusivity and prestige of the Ferrari brand. For regular customers, the Luce is expected to be priced around $640,000, which is still a significant amount but much lower than the auction price.

The smarter move for prospective Luce owners is to watch how Ferrari uses future Tailor Made charity cars and how quickly those early allocations translate into real deliveries, rather than treating this one-off hammer price as a guide to everyday EV sticker math.
