Volkswagen has issued a recall for 57,000 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs due to a backup camera failure. The recall affects 2024-2026 models and is caused by a software issue that can prevent the backup camera image from displaying when the vehicle is in reverse.
The problem occurs when a low-voltage electrical disruption affects the center display and camera control, interrupting the signal that should call up the rearview image. As a result, the screen may stay dark or not show the camera view at all when the vehicle is shifted into reverse.

However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has mandated that all vehicles have a working backup camera system to reduce the risk of accidents.
Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notification letters starting from September 18, 2026. The repair will be a free software update at the dealer, and owners can check if their vehicle is included in the recall by visiting the NHTSA website or contacting their local Volkswagen dealer.
In the meantime, Volkswagen advises owners to drive with extra care when the camera image does not appear, using mirrors and looking over their shoulder to be aware of their surroundings.
