The Tommykaira ZZ is a sports car that was first introduced in the 1990s. It was known for its lightweight design, simple features, and agile handling. The car was often compared to the Lotus Elise, another popular sports car of the time. Over the years, the Tommykaira ZZ has undergone several changes, including the introduction of an electric version.
A new design study, called the Number Nine Works Sweep 9, has been unveiled, giving us a glimpse of what a future incarnation of the Tommykaira ZZ could look like. The design study is the result of a collaboration between Yuji Fujitsuka, who originally designed the second-generation ZZ, and Ryuhei Ishimaru, who runs the design firm Fortmarei. The goal of the project was to modernize the ZZ's front end while ensuring that the car meets all of Japan's passenger car safety standards.
The classic triangular-pod headlight shape with big, round lamps has been replaced with slimline LED units and lower elements containing two small lamps on each side, including turn signals. The new design gives the car a more modern and marketable look, especially in today's automotive market. In fact, the Sweep 9's face can be described as what you would get if Porsche decided to revive the 914, with a mix of Cayenne EV and Mission R elements.
The rest of the car, including its electric motor, which produces 305 horsepower, and its sub-1-ton curb weight, remains unchanged. The companies behind the design study have released limited pictures of the car, and none of the rear end, which may suggest that this is a one-off project rather than a preview of a new Tommykaira ZZ model.
