A group of thieves stole two Corvettes and a Camaro from a hotel parking lot in Joliet, Illinois, and damaged several other muscle cars. The incident occurred on June 9, during the early morning hours, at the Holiday Inn & Suites on Rock Creek Boulevard. The thieves targeted the parking lot where participants of the Hot Rod Power Tour had parked their vehicles.
The Hot Rod Power Tour is a week-long celebration of American car culture, and this year it kicked off in Joliet, Illinois, before heading to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Car enthusiasts from across the country had gathered with their prized vehicles to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Route 66. However, the event took a turn for the worse when the thieves struck, leaving several car owners with damaged or stolen vehicles.
According to reports, the stolen vehicles include a 2017 Corvette Z06, a Camaro, and another Corvette. The total value of the stolen and damaged vehicles is estimated to be between $60,000 and $90,000 each. The Joliet Police Department is investigating the incident and believes that the thefts were part of a coordinated operation. The owners of the stolen vehicles were still in possession of their keys, suggesting that the thieves may have used sophisticated electronic methods to gain access to and start the vehicles.
One of the stolen vehicles, the 2017 Corvette Z06, was later recovered in nearby Dolton after it was involved in a crash. The owner of the vehicle, who was participating in the Hot Rod Power Tour for the 19th time, expressed his disappointment and frustration at the incident. The police are urging anyone with surveillance footage or information related to the thefts to come forward and contact the Tri-County Auto Theft Task Force.
