We already knew the CT5 would get a second generation, but now it sounds like the high-performance Blackwing variant will return too. Learning that a car you love is returning for another generation is a bit like being a kid and hearing that a friend whose family moved away is coming back to your hometown. Considering last year's news that the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans are being discontinued after the 2026 model year, we're overjoyed by the recent GM Authority report that the CT5-V Blackwing is getting a second generation.
While it's true that we already knew the standard CT5 would eventually return, the new report is the first we've heard about the fire-breathing, track-capable Blackwing variant. The standard CT5 is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo four, but the outgoing Blackwing sports a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 that pairs 668 horsepower with a wonderful six-speed manual (an automatic transmission is also available).
Unfortunately, we don't yet know what engine Cadillac plans to use in the CT5-V Blackwing's successor. We know the returning CT5 will ride on GM's updated Alpha platform, which will reportedly also underpin a revived Chevy Camaro and a new Buick sedan, but we don't know anything beyond that.
View Price on AmazonIt's possible that Cadillac will use the new LS6 6.7-liter V-8 that is launching with the 2027 Corvette Stingray and Grand Sport lineups, though with 535 horsepower, the newer engine is considerably less potent than the current setup. There are ways around that, of course, including the addition of forced induction, so we'd be shocked if Cadillac decided to introduce a less powerful Blackwing.
It's also possible that the CT5 returns wearing a different name. Last year, Cadillac announced "the legacy of the CT5 will continue with a next-generation ICE vehicle," but that message leaves the door open for a rebrand. A spokesperson for Cadillac declined Car and Driver's request to confirm the GMA report, and instead pointed to the fact that the brand has already confirmed the return of the CT5 as a gas-powered model.
