The Electric Porsche 718 Is Still Coming to Showrooms, CEO Says

Rumors of the still-unrevealed EV’s demise were premature, as per recently appointed chief exec Michael Leiters. The Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster as we’ve known them are gone from dealerships, and their successors are having a difficult path to market. An EV replacement, first spotted testing all the way back in 2022, was supposedly facing a possible cancellation in February even after Audi began planning its own electric sports car on the architecture.

A new gas model was confirmed less than a year ago, only to face its own cancellation rumors last month. That leaves Porsche with uncertain futures along both potential paths for its more entry-level sports car option — but fortunately, CEO Michael Leiters says that at least one of those options is still on track.

In a recent interview with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Leiters touched on a wide-ranging series of questions about both the company’s current financial perils and future plans to return to success. One such query touched on the electric 718, which has been one of a few new products that have been in an odd place after initial plans to shift much of the company’s lineup to electric power saw poor returns.

Leiters tells the paper, however, that the company’s leaders “came to the conclusion that we will build the [EV] – because it is the best solution economically and will be a fantastic car.” Given how much time and effort Porsche has likely put into developing the platform over the past five or more years, giving up on the 718 EV product now would always have been a surprising choice.

Lineup news was not just limited to the 718, either. Leiters says that has “no plans to discontinue the Taycan in the short term,” ensuring at least temporary survival for the four-door EV as the brand instead cuts down on the number of variants available.
