The Bovensiepen 05 GT is a super-wagon that might be Germany's best autobahn crusher. Built in the same Buchloe factory as Alpinas of yore, this new performance wagon might just be the coolest coming out of Germany today.
While you may not be familiar with the Bovensiepen family, you're likely well-acquainted with their work on BMW products. They’re the founders and original purveyors of Alpina, who helmed the brand for over 50 years until its sale to BMW in March 2022. Traditions die hard, however. Now the family is ready to show off the Bovensiepen 05 GT, which picks up right where old-school Alpina B5 lineup left off—which is unsurprising, given the fact it's built by hand in the same Buchloe factory as the family’s old models.
View Price on AmazonThe basis for the 05 GT is a full-blown M5 Touring, which is further enhanced and massaged to provide 800 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque from the hybridized twin-turbo V-8. A bespoke titanium Akrapovič exhaust system helps ensure that the V-8 sound as raucous as possible, exhaling through four oval pipes.
The super-wagon is also outfitted with a revised suspension system, which tweaks to the structural support and strut towers, as well as a set of new Eibach springs. The company says this system not only provides a dynamic chassis, but also supports ride comfort for passengers, including those in the rear seats. That said, the Bovensiepens love a nice big wheel, and the 05 GT rides on a set of 20-spoke, 21-inch units wrapped in custom compound Pirelli rubber.
Not ones to simply adjust the performance of the car, the Bovensiepen team has also revised the styling of the M5. The bodywork is now much more restrained and flowing, owing to the skillful pen of one Frank Stephenson. Stephenson is responsible for a number of iconic designs, including the original BMW X5, the reborn Mini Cooper, the Fiat 500, Ferrari F430, and McLaren P1, to name a few. The interior has also been reworked to the Bovensiepen standard, with a massive amount of high-quality leather and aluminum throughout.
Customers will have a massive amount of control over how the cars are specced, which is welcomed at the wagon’s price of around $230,850 in the German market. Would you be willing to pony up that much more over a standard M5 Touring for a car from the minds behind the original Alpina?
