Electric boats are slowly gaining popularity, but for those in the market for a small, powerful, and fast electric jet boat, there aren't many options available. The team behind the Prop Department YouTube channel decided to take matters into their own hands and build their dream mini jet boat from scratch.
The project, which started three years ago, features a custom-made hull and battery enclosures, as well as a bespoke electric motor, controller, and inverter. Initially, the boat was powered by a Tesla Model 3 motor producing around 280 horsepower. However, the team soon upgraded to a custom-tuned Tesla Model S motor, which delivers over 350 horsepower.
Two of the four battery modules were replaced with new ones due to dead cells that limited the boat's power output. An aftermarket battery management system (BMS) was installed, and each custom module is liquid-cooled, similar to the original Tesla pack. A custom stub shaft was fitted directly to the motor's output shaft, eliminating the need for the original transmission and increasing the final RPM.
The team used an aftermarket controller board for the motor inverter, allowing them to control the drive unit without being limited by Tesla's safety guards. The boat features a J1772 charge port, but it doesn't support fast charging. Despite being a work in progress, the project is an impressive feat that showcases the team's ingenuity and dedication.
