Rivian vehicles are known to be expensive, and the cost of repairs can be just as staggering. A recent report of a fender bender costing $42,000 has raised eyebrows, and Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has weighed in on the issue. According to Scaringe, there's no collision repair that should cost tens of thousands of dollars.
In an interview, Scaringe explained that the high repair costs are often due to the fact that Rivian vehicles are made of aluminum and have a unique design. The company's first vehicle, the R1, has a one-piece body side, which can make repairs more complicated. However, Scaringe noted that Rivian has implemented a solution to ease the issue by providing subsets of the full panel for collision centers to use.
Unlike service and sales, which are vertically integrated and done in-house, Rivian doesn't have its own collision centers. This means that third-party centers may not be familiar with Rivian vehicles, leading to higher repair estimates. Scaringe emphasized that standard procedures are in place, and the company is working to educate collision centers on how to repair Rivian vehicles properly.
Other manufacturers, such as GMC and Audi, have also faced criticism for high repair costs. The GMC Hummer EV's taillight, for example, costs $6,100 to replace, plus labor. Audi's adaptive Matrix LED headlight setup is also pricey to repair. However, Scaringe is confident that Rivian can improve its repair costs and provide a better experience for its customers.
