Rivian's CEO RJ Scaringe says the company's production line in Georgia will allow for additional variants of the R2, which could include a compact pickup truck. In April, Rivian reached a crucial milestone when customer-ready versions of its compact R2 SUV began rolling off the production line in Normal, Illinois, ahead of the start of deliveries later this spring.
While Rivian needs to focus on ramping up production and delivering these initial units without major problems, the American startup is thinking about the future. According to Reuters, the company is considering expanding the R2 lineup, with hints about other R2 models coming from Scaringe, who was asked about a possible pickup truck version of the R2.
The R2 is initially being assembled in Illinois, but Rivian is also readying another factory outside Atlanta, Georgia, that will build the R2 in the future. Although Scaringe did not directly confirm a pickup truck variant, an R2T seems like a likely candidate for production, given that Rivian's larger R1 line comes in both R1T truck and R1S SUV forms. The plant isn't expected to start churning out vehicles until late 2028, so an R2T likely won't arrive before then.
A truck isn't the only option on the menu, as Scaringe also suggested a possible R2X, which would likely be a high-performance model. Rivian previously announced an R3X as a sporty version of the subcompact R3 SUV due out sometime before 2030. The R3X is set to feature a tri-motor powertrain, and a similar setup would likely be found in a possible R2X, presumably besting the 656 horsepower offered in the dual-motor Performance trim.
