Red Bull’s RB17 hypercar is now one significant step closer to reality. The company has officially begun the final assembly of its inaugural unit, with initial deliveries anticipated to commence next spring.

In a recent interview with Autocar, Rob Bray, the car’s program chief, confirmed that Red Bull is slated to kick off comprehensive testing and development sessions "within a few weeks." This track-only hypercar, masterfully designed by Adrian Newey, was initially unveiled at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Underneath its aggressive shell, the RB17 is propelled by a Cosworth-developed, naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V12 engine. This powerhouse revs to an exhilarating 15,000 rpm, churning out an impressive 1,000 horsepower. But the V12 isn't alone; the RB17 operates as a hybrid, incorporating a 200-horsepower electric motor integrated into the Xtrac gearbox, collectively boosting the car’s total output to a staggering 1,200 hp.

Designed with extreme performance in mind, the vehicle is projected to tip the scales at just under 2,000 pounds and achieve a top speed of 220 miles per hour. The RB17 is engineered to generate a monumental 3,747 lbs of downforce, a figure so substantial that Red Bull intentionally had to restrict it at speeds exceeding 93 mph to prevent overwhelming the tires.

The hypercar's aerodynamic design has evolved since its initial reveal nearly two years ago. Most notably, it now features a distinct central spine positioned over the engine cover, a modification that further enhances downforce directed towards the rear wing.

Motor1’s Take: While Adrian Newey has since departed from Red Bull, the RB17 remains his groundbreaking creation. It’s truly remarkable to witness such a sophisticated automotive masterpiece emerge from a company that originally made its name in energy drinks. What exciting innovations could possibly come next?
