Range Rover Sport to Add Electric Powertrain Option

The Range Rover Sport is expected to add an electric powertrain option to its lineup, featuring a dual-motor powertrain with all-wheel drive and a robust horsepower rating. Land Rover has been busy trimming powertrain offerings from its lineup, dropping the entry-level turbocharged four-cylinder from the Discovery and Defender lineups, and axing the 5.0-liter V-8 in non-Octa trims of the Defender. Amid those changes, however, a new powertrain is entering the chat, and it's electric.

An electric version of the full-size Range Rover has been promised for years—and is reportedly still part of the plan—but now a mid-size Range Rover Sport Electric has been shown in prototype form looking as production-ready as the current gas-powered models. Land Rover hasn't announced many details about the RR Sport Electric's powertrain, but its two electric motors provide the SUV with the all-wheel-drive traction required of the Range Rover name. The powertrain is said to be capable of producing up to 542 horsepower and 637 lb-ft of torque, according to Top Gear.

Driving range is said to be as high as 380 miles per charge, but that's based on WLTP estimates, which are representative of European driving scenarios. The range in the EPA methodology that we use here in the U.S. hasn't been released yet, but should still come in above the 300-mile mark. Styling differences between the electric model and the regular gas-powered RR Sport are minimal. The upper grille is blocked off by a stylized plastic panel but is rendered in such a way as to appear like a grille. Around back, the lack of tailpipes is the sole indicator of the SUV's electric status.

The Range Rover Sport is the brand's performance-oriented model, with an SV trim packing a 626-hp punch from its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine. Despite its slightly lower horsepower rating, the electric variant could challenge the SV's speed-demon title. Land Rover acknowledged in a press release that the electric variant has the power to "redefine performance SUVs."

When the Range Rover Sport Electric will show up on dealer lots is an unanswered question. Given the regular Range Rover Electric's slow march toward production, this second entry could also be subject to similar delays. However, the photos released by Land Rover show the SUV without camouflage and looking otherwise ready to roll, so it's possible that it could ship to showrooms sometime in 2027.
