Porsche is making a significant move in its electrification journey, confirming that production of the gasoline-powered Macan SUV will officially cease by Summer 2026. While this marks a definitive end for the internal combustion engine (ICE) variant on the production line in Leipzig, Germany, some markets could still see deliveries extending into 2027.

The announcement came directly from Porsche's Chief Financial Officer, Jochen Breckner, during a recent earnings call. “Production will stop in summer 2026, and in the last remaining month, we will produce as much as possible,” Breckner stated. He noted that while Porsche’s internal capacity is not a limiting factor, "parts supply from suppliers is the other factor" dictating the final output push.

This strategic pivot highlights a fascinating dynamic for the Stuttgart-based automaker. Since 2024, Porsche's Leipzig plant has been building both the traditional combustion Macan and the all-electric Macan, based on the advanced PPE platform. The original vision, heavily influenced by former Porsche CEO Oliver Blume’s ambitious EV targets, was for the electric variant to seamlessly take over as Porsche's global bestseller.

However, market realities have proven more complex. While sales figures for the Macan Electric are "developing positively," demand for the gasoline model remains robust in markets where it's still available for order. This unexpected resilience for the ICE variant has prompted Porsche’s executive board to re-evaluate its initial, purely electric succession plans due to a "more hesitant market development" for electric vehicles than anticipated.

The result? Porsche is now developing a new Macan model that will feature both gasoline and hybrid powertrains. Enthusiasts eager for a non-electric Macan will, however, need to exercise patience, as this new iteration is not expected to debut for another two years, likely pushing its arrival to around 2028. Until then, anyone looking to purchase a new Porsche Macan must opt for the electric version.

This shift could particularly impact Porsche in key markets like the United States. The brand has already faced challenges there, partly due to its solely European production and the tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Data for the first three months of 2026, as reported by Carscoops, underscores this point: Porsche sold 8,079 Macan Electric units in the U.S., but the combustion model still significantly outsold it with 10,130 units. This clear preference for the gasoline Macan in the American market underscores the necessity of Porsche's strategic adjustment.

The road ahead for the Macan lineup is now a blend of established and emerging technologies, as Porsche navigates consumer preferences and regulatory pressures on its path to electrification.
