Woody and Jessie are proud of their blue jeans, and as a result, Porsche will now offer a twill fiber fabric to its custom-build customers. Denim is all the rage right now, as selvedge jeans and buckleback Type II denim jackets dominate the world with Western-inspired fashion trends—and automakers are taking notice.
The automaker's latest collaboration with Pixar features a pair of 911 models designed to honor Toy Story's cowpoke pair of Woody and Jessie; both toys are clad in denim, of course, and Porsche likes to be precise about the details. So, to appropriately embody the duo, Porsche created its own denim-like fabric for the Pixar-edition 911s.
"We have a denim fabric here for the first time in the seat inserts. This one is made from a mix of blue and white fibers. It was very important for us that it was true to the character of denim," Claas Hoops, head of Porsche Sonderwunsch, said. "That's why the way it is woven was very important to us. So it's a so-called twill weave, and this creates this diagonal structure that is so typical for denim."
Now, Porsche's denim fabric won't feel like your favorite pair of jeans. Automotive-grade interior materials must pass various durability tests, and a typical pair of blue jeans wouldn't meet the flammability and abrasion standards. But Porsche's new seat center and door panel feature the closest automotive-grade textile to a pair of Levi's we've ever seen.
"We learn a lot from these processes, and also we have fun exploring new techniques during these developments. For example, the denim fabric matches all the industry standards, especially our own Porsche standards that we have for fabrics," Hoops said.
And it won't be exclusive to Porsche's one-off Pixar cars, either. A spokesperson for Porsche confirmed to Road & Track that the denim fabric will be available throughout the Sonderwunsch program for future special-wish customer projects. This doesn't mean the denim fabric will be on Porsche's great online configurator; instead, it will be offered upon special request, like most of the materials showcased in the Toy Story 5-inspired vehicles.
