The Bugatti Veyron was a game-changer when it was first introduced, with a price tag of $1.2 million. After 20 years, it has proven to be more than just a vanity project for Ferdinand Piech or a technological moonshot for Volkswagen Group. It's also more than a six-figure ego trip for socially irresponsible billionaires. Yes, it's all those things, but it's also proven to be a harbinger. We live in the future the Veyron made, and that's why it's one of the 21st century's most important cars.

I once had the chance to drive a Veyron, and even after all these years, the opportunity to get behind the wheel again still made my palms sweat in anticipation. Back in 1990, Chevrolet was making waves with its new Corvette ZR-1, which boasted an impressive 375 horsepower. The Porsche 928 GT had 326 horsepower from its 5.0-liter V-8, and the Ferrari Testarossa was making do with 380 horsepower. It seemed like 400 horsepower was the limit for any street-legal car.

But then things changed. The EB110 turned out to be the first true hypercar when it appeared in 1991. It was packed with innovations, including a carbon-fiber structure and an all-wheel-drive system that could direct different amounts of torque to each axle. The EB110 was powered by a quad-turbo, 3.5-liter V-12 that made 553 horsepower. During a top-speed comparison test in 1995, the evolved 611-hp EB110 S was the fastest car at the event, reaching a speed of 213.1 mph.

The Veyron, which appeared in 2005, took performance to a whole new level. With 987 horsepower and 922 lb-ft of torque, it could propel its 4,160-pound body to a top speed of over 250 mph. The Veyron was never nervous or anxious; it was sophisticated and untemperamental, making it a 1000-hp car that was composed enough to drive every day in traffic. This new opportunity to drive a Veyron came as Bugatti launched its latest model, and it was a chance to experience the car that changed the world.

The Veyron's impact on the automotive world cannot be overstated. It was a harbinger of the future, a car that showed us what was possible when it came to performance and technology. And even though it was expensive and exclusive, it paved the way for other high-performance cars that followed in its footsteps. The Veyron may have been a vanity project for some, but it was also a groundbreaking car that changed the world.
