Take a look at Nissan's history, and you'll quickly realize that off-roading has always been a part of the company's heritage. Starting with the Patrol SUV in the early 1950s, Nissan has been paving its own path for over 75 years.
Today, Nissan is still committed to its off-road roots, with models like the Armada Pro-4X and the entire Frontier line. This year, Nissan introduced the Frontier Sport, a more affordable alternative to the Pro-4X. The Frontier Sport offers a moderately equipped off-roader at a lower price point, similar to the Ford Tremors, Chevrolet Trail Bosses, and Toyota TRD Sports.
We spoke with Brent Hagan, who leads product planning for Frontier in the US, to discuss the new Frontier Sport, the importance of the V6, and Nissan's off-road heritage. Hagan explained that the objective was to offer something below the Pro-4X, without encroaching on its positioning or price point.
"Most truck customers, one of the first things they do is put on some all-terrain tires," Hagan said. "So why not offer that at a more affordable price point? And why not offer Dark Armor—a new introduction for 2026—which customers have loved?" The Frontier Sport gives Nissan a good position between the SV and Pro-4X, offering a little more personality and bold performance with all-terrain tires and skid plates.
