Mercedes C-Class Electric: A New Era of Luxury and Performance

The arrival of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Electric marks a significant milestone on the road to full electrification. As the company whose founder, Karl Benz, patented the combustion-powered passenger vehicle 140 years ago, Mercedes is now launching an electric version of its defining model. The C-Class Electric is designed to "hit the center of the Mercedes fan base," according to CEO Ola Källenius. While the GLC SUV is currently the best-seller for Mercedes, the compact executive saloon market remains the arena where German premium brands are judged.

The C-Class Electric looks similar to the regular C-Class, with a few notable differences. The wheelbase is nearly 3.9 inches longer than the ICE C-Class, at 116.5 inches. The car is also closer in length to an E-Class (195.7 inches) than its namesake (186.7 inches). The design features classic Mercedes cues, such as the front grille, which has a unique LED pattern. The proportions are those of a classic executive saloon, with some aerodynamic refinements to improve efficiency.

The C-Class Electric will be launched as the 400 4Matic, which is set to be the most powerful standard version (excluding any AMG models). This features two motors combining for maximum outputs of 483 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, powered by a 94kWh (usable capacity) battery. The saloon is lower, more aerodynamic, and lighter than the GLC, resulting in a longer range of up to 473 miles on a full charge. The most efficient model available in the US will have a range of 452 miles, due to the larger 19-inch wheels.

Mercedes' new EV powertrain is unique in that the rear motor has a two-speed gearbox to optimize power delivery, while the front motor is used to boost power output and can be disconnected to aid efficiency when not needed. The native 800V electrical architecture allows for charging rates of up to 330kW. All US-bound cars will be fitted with a 400V inverter, enabling them to use all chargers.
