It seems the driver may have overestimated the capabilities of "Wade Mode." In case anyone was looking for the latest result of what happens if you try to use a Tesla Cybertruck as a boat, well, here it is. A Cybertruck driver recently piloted their pickup into Grapevine Lake outside of Dallas, Texas ... and it did not end well.

This news comes to us via the Grapevine Police Department, which posted the image of the sunken Cybertruck on social media. The driver reportedly entered the lake via a boat ramp on purpose, saying he was using the vehicle’s “Wade Mode.” Tesla states that the maximum depth of water Wade Mode (raises vehicle to maximum ride height and pressurizes the battery) is designed for is 32 inches measured from the bottom of the tire. Based on where the Cybertruck ended up, it looks like the owner entered water far deeper than that.

Police say that, after the truck became stuck, the driver and passengers abandoned the vehicle in the lake. The Grapevine PD says it later arrested the driver “on charges of operation of vehicle in closed section of Park/Lake and numerous water safety equipment violations.” It also reminded the public in a Facebook post that “although a vehicle may be physically capable of entering shallow freshwater areas, doing so can create legal and safety concerns under Texas law.”

A video posted to social media shows the before, during and after of this saga in detail. Things were apparently going well in shallow water, until the driver decided to test their luck further out; water eventually rose to the Cybertruck’s bumper and beyond its tires. Footage from later in the evening shows the Grapevine Fire Department Water Rescue Team extracting the truck from the lake with straps attached to all four wheels.

In case you needed a reminder, no matter what Elon Musk may have suggested in the past, your Cybertruck is not a boat and cannot be used as one. Wade mode is ideal for a shallow river or creek, but don’t send it into an unknown lake.
