Certain 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L models are being recalled because the side airbags may not deploy immediately during a crash.
Jeep issued a recall for 419,035 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L SUVs, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Documents associated with the recall show that the defect in question is related to the side airbags, which may not deploy immediately during a crash.
According to the NHTSA's paperwork, the Grand Cherokee L makes up the majority of the recall population, with 278,905 cars affected, while the standard wheelbase Grand Cherokee accounts for the remaining 140,130 vehicles. The Grand Cherokees are all from the 2022-2026 model years, with the Grand Cherokee Ls built between the 2023-2025 model years.
The associated documents show that the problem stems from the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC), which may have a fault in its software that causes the door airbag pressure sensor fault to remain active for the life of the sensor. The faulty software could cause a delay in the side airbag's deployment during a crash, thereby increasing the chance of injury.
As a remedy, Jeep technicians will update the ORC software to remove the fault. The recall does not include any "Do Not Drive" warnings, and the company plans to send out owner notification letters between June 11 and June 19.
