GM celebrates the opening of its new Pasadena design studio with a pair of midsize takes on the Hummer EV. In a world of 1250-horsepower Corvettes and ultra-luxury Cadillacs, the GMC Hummer SUV and pickup truck are no longer the most outrageous new cars in the General Motors family. That does not mean they've been forgotten, though. GM is celebrating the opening of a new design studio in Pasadena, California, by re-imagining its enormous electric SUV with a pair of outdoorsy concepts one size smaller than what we've seen recently.
Dubbed the Hummer X SUV and Hummer X Pick-Up, the two concepts are headlined by the huge difference in size from the typically massive Hummer EV. GM Design calls this a mid-sized EV, with a 116-inch wheelbase and 188-inch total length that come in at 10 and eight inches shorter than the production Hummer SUV, respectively. That smaller size is reflected on the pick-up, too, which is five inches shorter in wheelbase and 10 inches shorter in total length from the Hummer truck on sale today.
View Price on AmazonBoth Hummer X models come with cutouts in the bodywork that further distinguish the EVs from their larger relatives. The SUV, in particular, looks adventurous, with a contrasting red canopy over an otherwise open-air roof. Black bumpers and fenders offer some separation from the bodywork, helping add some visual distinction across the massive sides of the two EVs.
These are concepts, so they also include a few experimental features unlikely to reach production any time soon. The most exciting is a scout drone tied to a theoretical family of apps called "Hummer Hub." This would allow a Hummer X owner on an adventure to scan ahead of their truck for obstacles and other things in the path on a given trail or open terrain area.
Unfortunately for those of us excited by the possibility of a smaller, more adventurous Hummer, GM stresses that the Hummer X concepts are "purely a concept with no intention for production. [The cars are] an exercise and platform for our advanced design, manufacturing, and R&D teams to explore potential new territories, technologies, and techniques." Hopefully, something from these adventurous concepts reaches a road-going electric Hummer at some point in the future.
