Ford has announced that it is discontinuing the 6.8L engine in the Super Duty lineup, making the 7.3L gas V8 the standard engine for 2027 models. The 7.3L engine, affectionately nicknamed "Godzilla," has been an optional upgrade since its introduction in the 2020 model year. It has been a popular choice among Super Duty truck owners, with many opting for the more powerful engine over the standard 6.2L or 6.8L engines.
The decision to make the 7.3L engine standard was likely driven by customer demand. With the 7.3L engine, the Super Duty lineup will now offer more power and capability, with 430 horsepower and 485 lb-ft of torque. This is a significant upgrade over the 6.8L engine, which produced 405 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque.
In addition to making the 7.3L engine standard, Ford is also discontinuing the standard-output 6.7L Power Stroke diesel engine. The high-output version of the 6.7L Power Stroke, which produces 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque, will now be the sole diesel option. This move is likely intended to simplify the engine lineup and offer customers more power and capability.
Truck buyers often prioritize power and capability, and Ford's decision to make the 7.3L engine standard reflects this. The move is also likely to increase profits for Ford, as the high-output Power Stroke was previously a $2,500 option over the standard-output unit.
