Ford is recalling nearly all of the Broncos it's sold in the U.S. since the beginning of this generation due to the potential of a fire in the engine compartment. The total number being recalled is 565,691, spanning 2021-2026 model years.

For reference, the total number of Broncos sold in the U.S. from the beginning of sales through the first half of 2026 is just a hair under 590,000 vehicles. The problem stems from the Bronco's wiring harness.

According to Ford's recall documents, "Relative movement between the engine compartment wiring harness and surrounding components and insufficient abrasion protection on the wiring harness can lead to exposure of wiring. If internal harness circuits are exposed, intermittent shorts can create arcing." The heat or spark at the short could ignite other flammable components in the engine bay, resulting in an engine compartment fire.

Ford says your only warning signs for this will be smoke in the air vents or a cluster warning message right before flames are visible. The recall docs also state that the flames would be starting from the passenger side of the engine compartment.

Ford's investigation into this issue started just over a month ago in June. As of July this year, Ford says it's aware of 15 field incidents where a fire in the engine bay originated from the wiring harness. The investigation details are also rather interesting, in that seven of these 15 fires were from Bronco Raptor models.

The fix is a relatively straightforward one. All recalled Broncos will have convolute sheathing with abrasion tape installed on their engine compartment wiring harness at the dealer free of charge. All Broncos that were built after June 28 also have "enhanced protective covering" on the wiring harness. Recall notices are expected to be sent out to owners by August 28.
