Ford is recalling 548,463 Expedition SUVs because the center console found in some 2018–2024 examples could peel away, leaving behind potentially dangerous edges. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 12.8 percent of the recalled population is expected to suffer from the defective center consoles.
The recall documents show that the defect is as simple as the center console's chrome trim peeling or separating from the base material, which could leave behind sharp edges. According to the NHTSA paperwork, the peeling chrome is said to have been manufactured with parameters that don't meet Ford's specifications.
As of June 2, Ford is aware of 34 customer call center reports, 150 field reports, and 4634 warranty reports globally, which are potentially related to the peeling chrome. The automaker is also aware of one accident and 65 injuries that were potentially related to the defect.
According to the documents filed with NHTSA, the fix is simple. Owners will be instructed to bring their Expedition to their local dealership, where technicians will inspect the center console. The techs will replace any consoles with bubbling or peeling chrome with replacements that meet Ford's production specifications.
Dealerships have already been notified, with interim owner notification letters planned to go out on June 29, though the actual remedy letters aren't expected to be sent out until January 29, 2027.
