Ford doesn't even offer a police package for the new Mustang, but that hasn't stopped police agencies from snatching them up. A sinister form has begun haunting the nation’s highway exit ramps, underpasses, hills, and other cruiser hidey holes. Speeders, beware. The Ford Mustang GT has recently reentered duty as an interstate cruiser in at least eight states, and if you spot one, its familiar 460-horsepower V-8 is sure to have you calling out, “Five-oh! Five-oh!”
The original pony car was last officially offered as a cop-mobile back in the late 20th century, from 1982-1993, when the blue oval brand produced the Fox Body Mustang Special Service Package. “This was a specific series that was designed for law enforcement use as a capable performance vehicle, but with a smaller footprint and lighter weight than traditional police sedans available at that time,” says Lindsey Bertino, Ford’s police brand marketing manager.
For those of us Gen Xers who came of driving age in that time period, the sight of its notchback silhouette, flush-mounted halogens, or A-pillar spotlights were enough to strike terror and cue that tingly fight-or-flight adrenaline rush.
View Price on AmazonThe recent return of the Mustang cop car has been catalyzed, in no small part, by the demise of another familiar and shockingly venerable police cruiser. “Discussions started back in 2024, after Dodge announced it would no longer manufacture the Charger Pursuit edition,” says Beau Duffy, executive director of public information for the New York State Police, which added 19 Mustang GTs to its fleet in 2025.
Following the elimination of the Charger AWD, many state police departments have been transitioning to four-wheel-drive SUVs, particularly the Explorer-based Ford Police Interceptor Utility EcoBoost AWD and Chevrolet Tahoe. “These vehicles handle better in adverse weather, improve visibility for our members, and are more visible to drivers when they are working to clear a crash or disabled vehicle on the highway,” Duffy says.
But departments have found special on-road use cases that are underserved by these larger, more ponderous trucks. “We were drawn to the Mustang’s ability to enforce speed on the interstates,” says Captain Zeb Stroup, who oversees the Logistics Unit for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, which added 25 Mustang GTs to its fleet in 2024. “These vehicles accelerate faster than other patrol vehicles, allowing us to overtake violators faster.” This reduces the time dedicated to apprehending a speeder, as well as the threat duration of a moving violation, according to Stroup.
Duffy of the New York State Police concurs, focusing, in addition to speed, on the Mustang’s superior agility and handling characteristics. He also sees the menacing two-door sports coupe’s crouched promise of high performance as a “strong deterrent” to both aggressive behaviors and extreme speeding on New York’s interstates and state highways, the only locations in which the force will deploy its Mustangs.
Because cop cars sit idle a lot of the time, these vehicles require special considerations. “They are often used essentially as mobile offices, so we design them with officer safety and ergonomics in mind,” says Ford’s Bertino. However, she adds that Ford does not currently offer police-specific Mustang content from the factory. “All upfit content is completed aftermarket,” she says. “Vehicles are delivered either to the dealership or shipped directly to an upfitter or a drop-ship location, depending on the agency’s specific upfit needs.”
Given the Mustang’s capabilities, as well as their desirability and rarity within state patrol fleets—they currently make up just over 1 percent of New York and North Carolina’s patrol vehicles—it was necessary to set up a process by which the ‘Stangs were allocated. “We carefully selected the Troopers who would operate the vehicles, and provided them with rigorous supplemental emergency vehicle operations training specific to the Mustang GT,” Duffy says.
