Olathe Ford in Kansas is dealing with an unusual circumstance - a robin has decided to make a nest and lay its eggs on the tire of a Ford F-250 Super Duty. The dealership learned that robins and their active nests are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, meaning they cannot legally relocate the nest.
The enormous tires and mighty wheel gap make a nice spot for a bird to raise its babies. In this case, the robin has four babies to care for. The dealership has become invested in the well-being of the robins and is waiting patiently for them to leave before allowing the customer to take delivery of the vehicle.
The dealership has even given the birds names - Lugnut, Axle, Diesel, and Turbo. A video posted on May 19 shows the birds are growing quickly. If these robins follow the normal timing, they'll likely start to filter out of the nest toward the end of May, and the customer might be able to take their truck home at the start of June.
The dealership jokes that this may be the only F-250 protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and it's likely they're correct. Unless other robins catch on and make this a trend, it's unlikely we'll see another case like this anytime soon.
