It seems the state of Florida has nabbed another super speeder in a C8-gen Chevrolet Corvette. This time, deputies say the mid-engine sports car was clocked at an astonishing 130 miles per hour in a posted 45-mph zone. According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, the driver was arrested at the scene and transported to the St. Johns County Jail.

Modern Corvettes are incredibly capable machines; even the latest version of the C8-gen base model, the 2027 Corvette Stingray, is capable of hitting 200 miles per hour. But public roads are not the sort of place to responsibly test out such velocities, as it's easy to underestimate how quickly things happen at those speeds. A vehicle traveling 130 miles per hour covers roughly 190 feet every second, leaving almost no time for a driver, or anyone else on the road, to react to an unexpected obstacle.
And that warning goes double for anyone in a municipality that has strengthened penalties for extreme speeding. The Sunshine State’s Dangerous Excessive Speeding Law, sometimes referred to as the "Super Speeder" law, makes it a criminal offense to exceed the posted speed limit by 50 miles per hour or more, or to drive at more than 100 miles per hour in a manner that endangers people or property — and this ‘Vette driver, according to police, violated both of those. A first conviction can carry penalties of up to 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both.
