The next version of the compact electric SUV is expected to arrive for the 2029 model year and will ride on a new platform. Chevrolet is having a confusing year when it comes to affordable electric cars. The Chevy Bolt is back, but sales of the Equinox EV, which led Chevy's EV charge last year, have fallen quite drastically. Still, according to a new report from GM Authority, that sales dip isn't scaring General Motors. Instead, the automaker is already preparing to launch a second-generation Equinox EV.
According to the report, the new Equinox EV should break cover in either late 2028 or early 2029, reaching dealer lots as a 2029 model year. While pretty much everything about the second-generation electric crossover is unconfirmed at this point, the report posits that the Equinox EV will ride on GM's planned BEV-N architecture. The current model rides on GM's BEV3 platform, which also underpins the Chevy Blazer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, Cadillac Optiq, Cadillac Vistiq, and the Cadillac Celestiq.

The report comes despite the Equinox EV's sales falling in recent months. After ramping up production through the second half of 2024, Chevy sold an impressive 57,945 Equinox EV crossovers in 2025. That made it the bestselling EV in 2025 from a company other than Tesla, which continues to dominate the sales charts with the Model 3 and Model Y. Chevy is nowhere near on track to replicate those numbers in 2026, having sold just 16,249 units through the first half of this year, dropping it to fifth on the list of bestselling EVs in 2026, behind the Toyota bZ and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
A spokesperson for Chevrolet declined a request from Car and Driver to confirm the GM Authority report, saying, "We cannot comment on future product plans." As the automotive industry continues to evolve, it's clear that Chevrolet is committed to its electric vehicle lineup, and the next-generation Equinox EV is an important part of that strategy.
