The next-generation BMW 1 Series will arrive in 2028 with both electric and hybrid powertrains, marking a return to rear-wheel drive. According to BMW's compact-car design boss Oliver Heilmer, the current entry-level hatchback is one of the "main pillars of the brand" and is set to get a significant makeover. The new model will sit on a bespoke platform, sharing styling and branding with the internal combustion engine (ICE) variants.
The new 1 Series will feature a 322 horsepower electric powertrain, which is equivalent to the current 3 Series. The car is expected to have a range of over 250 miles on a single charge. In addition to the electric powertrain, the 1 Series will also be available with a mild-hybrid petrol engine. The mild-hybrid system will provide an additional 11 horsepower and will help to reduce emissions.
The design of the 1 Series will be revised significantly for its fourth generation, with a focus on a more emotional and youthful appearance. The car will feature a new kidney grille, silhouette, and surface treatments, which will differentiate it from other models in the BMW lineup. The interior of the car will also get a radical makeover, with a new dashboard design and updated infotainment system.
The 1 Series is an important model for BMW, with nearly 200,000 units sold globally last year. Despite the shift towards SUVs and crossovers, BMW views the 1 Series as a key part of its business, particularly in markets such as Italy and France. The car is expected to appeal to younger buyers, with its sleek design and advanced technology features.
