What's the best kit for cleaning your car's interior? We put some top car interior kits to the test to see which ones work and which ones are overpriced bottles of disappointment.

Editor's note: This article was updated with new information in May 2026. This product category requires new testing about once a year, at which point we'll update this article.

If you've spent any amount of time searching for car interior cleaners, you know how quickly the category turns into a rabbit hole. There are hundreds of products promising easy, all-in-one results, but "interior cleaner" barely scratches the surface of what actually goes into properly detailing a cabin. You may actually be looking for an all-purpose cleaner, maybe something safe for leather, or a proper carpet and upholstery solution. The deeper you dive in, the more you realize that cleaning a car interior properly is less about one miracle product and more about having the right tools and chemicals for each surface.

For this test, I focused on complete interior cleaning and detailing kits from some of the most respected names in car care, brands that enthusiasts actually keep handy. Here's what I found.

I selected kits from companies I've personally had good experiences with over the years to find which kit felt genuinely useful in the real world: products that clean well, protect, and make the process of cleaning an aging interior feel satisfying.

To evaluate them, I pulled my Porsche Boxster into the garage. The Boxster made an ideal test mule, with its years of California-baked surfaces. The carpets carried embedded dirt from several New York winters, the dashboard had accumulated a light film, the door panels and rubber trim were overdue for attention, and the glass needed help. A proper, comprehensive interior detail was in order.

More than anything, this test became an exercise in figuring out what actually matters when maintaining a car's interior long term. Some kits prioritize convenience with simple spray-and-wipe products, while others lean into enthusiast-level detailing with dedicated cleaners for every surface imaginable. The real goal was to find the kits that make an interior feel genuinely refreshed.

Expert Tip: When using most carpet and upholstery cleaners, thoroughly vacuum the surfaces before applying the product. This will remove loose dirt, ensuring you aren't working it deeper into the surface you're trying to clean.

Of the kits I tested, Griot's Garage Starter Interior Kit was by far the most comprehensive of the bunch. The kit contains all sorts of things for cleaning just about every surface within your vehicle. The array of products is so comprehensive, in fact, that it may even be overkill for some.

Upon unboxing, you'll find several rags, a foam scrubber, swabs, sponges, multiple brushes, and the all-important cleaners themselves. You get sprays for glass, carpets, vinyl, and rubber, as well as multiple sprays for leather care and general detailing. The packaging is clean and professional, with bottles neatly and clearly labeled.

The first product I tried was the Odor Neutralizing Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner. (The only other kit I tested that included a carpet cleaner was the Stoner Kit.) So, for this part of my testing, I taped off a set of heavily soiled (but freshly vacuumed) floor mats from an old Saab 900 so I could see the results of the two cleaners side by side. I sprayed a generous amount of the Griot's product onto one of the mats and worked it in with the Horse Hair Interior Brush. The Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner was effective at lifting dirt and grime effortlessly from the fibers of the floor mat. It appeared to work well without a ton of effort, bringing the embossed "Saab" script on the floor mats back to life.

Next, I tried the Interior Cleaner and Detailer sprays. For this part of the test, I applied both products to some of the surfaces in my car, including the dashboard and center console.
