The back seven rows for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 have been set, with some shocking drivers failing to make the fast 12, including Penske's Josef Newgarden and all three Andretti Global drivers. With all qualifying activity from Saturday canceled and condensed into the Sunday schedule, the back seven rows for this year's Indianapolis 500 were locked in based on top qualifying speed over a four-lap run Sunday morning.
Just 1.504 seconds stood between Felix Rosenqvist at the top of the speed charts and Takuma Sato, the first driver to not advance to the top 12. All three multiple Indy 500 winners will not move forward to fight for a starting spot on the front three rows, with Sato qualifying 13th, Helio Castroneves 15th, and Josef Newgarden 24th.
Newgarden nearly won from the back row last year when he looked to three-peat. Joining the two and four-time champions are all three Andretti Global drivers, with the once-championship-leading Kyle Kirkwood qualifying 26th, 2018 Indy 500 champion Will Power 20th, and Marcus Ericsson 18th.
Katherine Legge, who has started her journey as the sixth person and first woman to attempt the famed Double, went out to qualify last and will start the race next to Kirkwood on the ninth row in 27th. All three Chip Ganassi Racing drivers made it through to the top 12, with Kyfin Simpson setting the buffer time of 231.095 in 12th.
Defending Indy 500 winner and IndyCar champion Alex Palou qualified one spot ahead of his teammate Simpson, and the strongest Indy 500 qualifier in the field, Scott Dixon, was the second fastest Honda and qualified eighth. Santino Ferrucci joins the CGR on the provisional fourth row with Dixon sandwiched between Rookie Caio Collett and McLaren's Pato O'Ward on the provisional third row.
