Audi's new A6 Allroad has been unveiled, and it's coming to the US in 2027. The high-riding wagon is more rugged than the usual station wagon, but more car-like than a crossover. It will join the A6 sedan in the American mid-sized lineup, which starts at $65,395 after a destination charge. The Allroad is expected to start slightly higher.
The A6 Allroad has long filled a specific niche: more rugged than the usual station wagon, but more conventionally car-like than the usual crossover. This market placement makes it a hit among Avant enthusiasts and insulates it against questions about bringing wagons to America. The new A6 Allroad is four inches wider and rides 1.3 inches higher than its more conventional Avant relative, playing a big part in its muscular look.
In Europe, the A6 Allroad will come with a standard adaptive air suspension and all-wheel steering. Two powertrains are available: a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 that makes 295 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque, and a plug-in gasoline hybrid that uses a 2.0-liter inline-four, an electric motor, and a 20.7-kWh (net) battery to put out a combined 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, while also delivering an estimated electric range of 59 miles. All-wheel drive is standard either way.
The decision to bring the Allroad to America is a departure from the basic A6 Avant, which remains forbidden fruit for American buyers. Audi did announce the A6 sedan for the American market, so the Allroad will join that more conventional model in the lineup.
While the Allroad is likely to be the best-selling Audi wagon in America, enthusiasts in the country may still get one more long-roofed A6 relative. Audi finally chose to bring the RS6 Avant to America in 2019, leading a resurgence of popularity for mid-sized performance wagons in the market that has since continued with the BMW M5 Touring. We know a new RS6 is coming soon, and we know it is going to be distinct from the new RS5—so here's hoping another RS6 Avant destined for America could be revealed soon.
