Audi S5-Driving Teen Hits 140 MPH During Chase Before Police Box Him in and Stop Him: Cops

You can’t outrun the law, especially when they have a coordinated response. Start with a 140-mile-per-hour pursuit on a narrow road, then add in several roundabouts, a suspect willing to drive on the wrong side of them, and radio chatter that sounds like a live-action game of chess. The dashcam footage released by the UK’s Durham Constabulary is an adrenaline rush from beginning to end. It’s also a good demonstration of how effective a coordinated police response can be.

According to the video’s description, officers from Durham’s Roads and Armed Policing unit were alerted to a suspected stolen Audi S5 near Rushyford in late June. The 17-year-old driver refused to stop, authorities say, and the car’s speed quickly climbed from 70 to 140 mph as officers tried to get ahead of the Audi. Terrifyingly, it all happened on roads that look barely wide enough for the cars involved, with junctions and roundabouts arriving far too quickly for comfort.

Perhaps the most engaging part isn’t just the speed; it’s the way the officers work together. Rather than simply following the Audi and waiting for one pursuing car to make a PIT maneuver, they try to surround it. One unit heads toward Thinford to deploy a spike strip, while others reposition toward Metal Bridge after the Audi changes direction. The radio traffic is remarkably calm considering someone is driving a V-8-powered Audi through the countryside at triple-digit speeds.

The first containment attempt looks like a scene from Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, but it doesn’t go perfectly; the Audi breaks through, but the contact appears to damage the front wheel. Officers report smoke as the chase continues at roughly 90 mph. A spike strip is eventually deployed, but even with damaged tires, the Audi keeps moving, crossing onto the wrong side of a roundabout and briefly managing to pull away again.

That’s where the officers’ coordination finally pays off. Several police vehicles, including BMW and Audi wagons, move into position and box the S5 in. The Audi is forced to a halt after further contact with the police cars, ending a pursuit that lasted only about six miles but somehow feels much longer.

Officers searching the Audi reportedly found keys for a Ford, Mercedes, BMW, and multiple Audis; several appear to have house keys attached. The teenager later pleaded guilty to offenses including dangerous driving and burglary; police say he has been remanded in custody pending sentencing in October.
