Rivian's smallest SUV yet, the 2029 R3, is a tall hatchback with meaty tires and some ground clearance. Although details are still scarce, Rivian has announced that the R3 will ride on the same platform as the compact R2 SUV, and a performance-oriented R3X model will also be available. The R3 is expected to come with single-, dual-, and tri-motor configurations, along with two different battery sizes. The largest battery is estimated to provide a driving range of over 300 miles.
The interior design of the R3 is similar to other Rivian models, blending rugged and upscale elements. The front and rear seats can fold flat to accommodate car-camping adventures. Rivian is expected to open order books closer to the R3's launch date, with online deposits likely required to secure a spot in line. When the R3 and R3X go on sale, they will compete with similarly sized EV SUVs such as the Kia EV6 and the Volvo EX30.
The R3 and R3X models will be new additions to the Rivian lineup, with production expected to start in late 2028. Rivian has stated that the performance-oriented R3X will enter production first, followed by the R3. If you're looking for a similar vehicle and don't mind a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely still have a warranty and will cost less than buying new.
Rivian has not yet released official specs for the R3 and R3X's batteries, but it's likely that they will be available with two different-sized packs – Standard and Large – with varying driving ranges depending on the powertrain. Since the boxier and slightly larger R2 is said to have an estimated range of over 300 miles per charge, it's possible that the smaller R3 may slightly exceed that figure.
