Despite the heavy camouflage, an early prototype of the new BMW X5 M (G95) already shows that the high-performance version of the recently unveiled X5 (G65) will feature a distinctive M kidney grille: a three-dimensional grille surround is visible between the headlights, suggesting a more vertical look than the horizontal design of the iX3 and iX5. The current spy photos also reveal numerous air vents in the lower part of the front apron, indicating the increased air demand of the upcoming top model.
Those hoping for a V8 engine like its predecessor will have to prepare for a radical change of course - because the F95 successor is expected to be a pure electric car. The BMW X5 M will not lack power, even with eight fewer cylinders, and we can expect a clear performance upgrade to at least 750 horsepower. The indicators for the particularly powerful drive are also clear in the side view, as perforated brake discs are visible behind the large wheels on both the front and rear axles.

Nevertheless, we expect four electric motors in the G95, just like in the electric M3, so that each wheel has its own drive and can be optimally controlled via the M eDrive control electronics.
The 2028 BMW X5 M (G95) will feature a unique M kidney grille and M eDrive technology, as well as distinctive aerodynamic elements and M Yellow Lights with yellow daytime running lights, which were already presented in the X5 M60e. The top model is expected to have a striking diffuser at the rear, which will provide a clear distinction from the weaker models.
It is relatively clear that the BMW X5 M will not be called the iX5 M, despite its electric drive: As Frank van Meel confirmed to us in an interview about the M3, the nomenclature of the high-performance electric cars from Garching will not have a clear distinction from the combustion engine models. The market launch of the internally named G95 power SUV is planned for summer 2028, but sporty alternatives based on the G65 will also be available beforehand: in addition to the plug-in hybrid X5 M60e, the X5 M60 with a V8 and the electric iX5 M70 are also planned for 2027.
