The 2027 Volkswagen Taos is a subcompact SUV that slots below the larger Tiguan and Atlas in the Volkswagen lineup. Despite its smaller size, the Taos shares the same chunky exterior styling theme and signature front and rear lighting elements as its larger siblings. A 174-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine provides adequate power to either the front or all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Taos's cabin is accommodating and borrows heavily from its larger siblings. While we'd prefer a few more knobs for frequently used functions and a more intuitive infotainment setup, the overall design is purposeful and pleasing, and the seats are comfortable. The Taos also delivers impressive fuel efficiency, with a solid 40 mpg in our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test.
The Taos lineup gets a new Sport trim positioned just above the base S model. It features black 18-inch wheels, black roof rails, and a black spoiler. The front bumper trim, rear skid plate, and exhaust tips are rendered in gunmetal grey. Yellow interior stitching and embossed black cloth seats further identify the new Sport trim. The base S trim now offers satellite radio, voice control, and two additional speakers for a total of six, as well as keyless entry.
In comparison to its competitors, the Honda HR-V is even slower, requiring 9.4 seconds to hit 60 mph, while the Mazda CX-30 was a tad better at 8.1 seconds. The CX-30 with the turbo engine leads the pack at 6.2 seconds. The front-drive Taos is EPA-rated at 28 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined, while the all-wheel-drive model is rated at 25 mpg city, 33 highway, and 28 mpg combined.
