Ferrari's newest entry-level GT convertible demands that you live in the moment. Unlike some of Ferrari's mightier steeds, presence is all that the Amalfi Spider truly asks of you. It inherits that trait from its predecessors, which include the Roma most recently, the Portofino before that, and the California originally. As the latest in Ferrari's open-top, front-engine V-8 GT lineage, the Amalfi isn't a scarlet streak set to max attack. Its silhouette is so achingly beautiful it should be carved in marble; we're particularly drawn to the side profile, where its contoured body lines flow freely into rear fenders that flex like the muscular thighs of Renaissance statuary. The designers took special care to have the five-layer soft-top roof perfectly mimic the shape of the coupe's slippery lid, preserving the Spider's proportions and balancing its visual weight.
The cabin is a world of satisfying tactile experiences. Grab the thin-rimmed wheel, and your palms delight in premium cowhide. Physical buttons have replaced the Roma's touch-capacitive controls, which makes menu searching and cruise-control setting more intuitive and easier to manage at speed. There is still a heavy emphasis on tech inside, and the now-10.3-inch infotainment display is nestled just above the center console to remove some visual clutter and free up the driver's sight line.
Alcantara and brushed aluminum abound, and pressing the key fob firmly into its rectangular home in the center console feels like an occasion no matter how many times you do it. The same can be said for thumbing the physical start button, which stirs the twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8 to life in its resting place behind the front axle. The baritone rumble of the flat-plane-crank V-8 is nice from a tonal perspective, but it takes some serious prodding to get the Amalfi to truly come alive.
It only does so in the final quarter of the rev range, staying subdued up until that point. Output remains the same 631 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque as in the Amalfi coupe—19 horsepower more than in the Roma Spider—which Ferrari claims is enough to reach 60 mph in a hair over three seconds. You won't find 296 or 12Cilindri levels of firepower here, but planting your right foot still summons a seemingly bottomless well of thrust as the decibels climb and you work your way up to a 7500-rpm redline and push on toward a claimed top speed of 199 mph.
