The 2027 BMW i5 has arrived, boasting a slightly increased driving range and a native Tesla-style NACS port on all versions. These updates make BMW's executive electric sedan more appealing, especially with the Tesla Model S no longer in production.
For the 2027 model year, BMW is offering two powertrain versions of the i5 in the United States, along with the range-topping i5 M60, which is still being sold as a 2026 model with a native NACS port. The base 2027 BMW i5 eDrive40 has an EPA-rated driving range of up to 328 miles on a full charge when equipped with 19-inch wheels. This represents an 18-mile or roughly 6% increase over the outgoing model, attributed to improvements in efficiency. The eDrive40 now achieves an average efficiency of 116 MPGe, equivalent to 3.45 miles per kilowatt-hour or 29 kilowatts per 100 miles, compared to the 2026 model's 110 MPGe (3.23 miles per kilowatt-hour or 31 kilowatts per 100 miles) with the same powertrain and wheel size.
View Price on AmazonHowever, opting for larger wheels reduces the range accordingly, as is the case with most electric vehicles on the market. A set of 20-inch wheels decreases the rear-wheel-drive i5's range to 299 miles, while 21-inch wheels further reduce the range to 262 miles.
According to BMW, the 2027 i5 eDrive40 is powered by a single, rear-mounted electric motor producing 335 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The vehicle can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 120 mph.
The all-wheel-drive i5 xDrive40 is powered by the same high-voltage battery as its single-motor counterpart but features an additional drive unit on the front axle, increasing the power output to 389 horsepower. The torque figure remains the same at 295 pound-feet. The extra power enables the i5 xDrive40 to accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 130 mph.
However, the increased power and weight result in a lower driving range, estimated to be between 262 and 283 miles on a full charge.
The 2027 BMW i5 can accept up to 205 kilowatts from a DC fast charger, allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes. BMW claims that a 10-minute top-up will yield approximately 80 to 86 miles of additional range.
The top-spec i5 M60, still a 2026 model, boasts 593 horsepower and can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, with a maximum range of 253 miles.
Previously, the BMW i5 was offered with a CCS charge port in the United States, but the automaker switched to the NACS connector earlier this year. To facilitate this change, BMW is including free adapters for DC and AC charging with all new i5s sold in the United States.
The 2027 BMW i5 starts at $68,550 for the eDrive40 model, with an additional $3,000 required for the dual-motor version. The 2026 i5 M60 starts at $85,550.
