With chassis tuning borrowed from the top-tier Speed model but paired with a slightly lower-output hybrid powertrain, the new 2026 Bentley Continental GT S aims to perfectly balance sportiness with ultimate indulgence—without venturing into over-the-top excess.
Last we checked, Porsche boasted over 20 distinct variants of its iconic 911. While Bentley has a ways to go to match that expansive number, the Continental lineup continues to grow with the introduction of the S specification for both the GT coupe and GTC convertible. After all, offering choice truly embodies the ultimate luxury.
Pinpointing precisely where the GT S fits within the diverse Continental range—which already includes the luxurious Azure, the bespoke Mulliner, and the performance-oriented Speed—isn't an easy task. Effectively, the S can be seen as a Speed model with a few distinctions: it drops four letters from its name, and its powertrain delivers 100 horsepower and 52 lb-ft of torque less.
Every 2026 Continental features a sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrain built around a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine. However, the S model utilizes the standard 671-hp version, rather than the Continental GT Speed's more potent, 'full-fat' 771-hp setup.
Bentley openly confirms that there are no hardware differences between the two powertrains. The 671-hp variant, also found in the "base-model" Continental GT and the Azure, is mechanically identical to the Speed and Mulliner's drivetrains. The key distinction lies in software tweaks that limit boost pressure from the turbochargers and adjust ignition timing accordingly.
During our test drive of the GT S, we never felt a lack of power. We estimate it will be only a few tenths of a second slower than the Speed, which sprinted to 60 mph in a blistering 2.8 seconds in our evaluations. For those seeking an even more engaging experience, a sportier-sounding exhaust system is available to let the V-8 truly sing, regardless of its overall output. Notably, opting for the S doesn't yield any weight savings, as both the lower- and higher-output versions of this powertrain share identical components.
The primary appeal of the S model is its more aggressive chassis programming, which it shares directly with the Speed. Regardless of whether your specific Continental features what Bentley calls its Active Chassis or Performance Active Chassis, all trims come equipped with air springs paired with adaptive dampers, rear-axle steering, active anti-roll bars, torque vectoring, and an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential. While these systems generally operate similarly in everyday driving, the S and Speed models truly differentiate themselves in Sport mode. This is achieved by increasing the firmness of the springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars, enhancing the rear-axle bias of the variable all-wheel-drive system, lowering the ride height by 0.4 inches, and recalibrating the rear-wheel steering, torque-vectoring, and stability control systems for sharper response.
As intricate as its formula may sound, the Continental GT S delivers an unequivocal joy to drive. Offering a broad spectrum of dynamic capabilities, this substantial Bentley remains unflappable over rough roads in Comfort mode and proves surprisingly agile and eager to change direction in Sport mode. While it won't match the surgical precision of a Porsche 911—no machine weighing over 5000 pounds truly could—its steering offers excellent on-center feel, the cabin remains supremely quiet, and body motions are expertly controlled. In any driving scenario, it embodies the refined and confident feel a Bentley should.
While a "base price" is almost an irrelevant metric for any ultra-luxury vehicle, the GT S coupe comes in just under $300,000. Bentley hopes that this modest discount compared to the Continental GT Speed, combined with the GT S model's unique visual cues—including a model-specific 22-inch wheel design, dark chrome trim, and tinted taillights—will attract a specific segment of its discerning clientele. Ultimately, the allure of a Bentley often transcends minor distinctions like trim levels.
